The historic night club that is always a cool 57 degrees is host to the Southern Summer Music Festival beginning at 6 p.m.
Friends of Lost River hope to raise $15,000 during Saturday’s fundraiser concert with dancing in the cave’s ballroom to the tunes from two stages featuring Southern rock, Friends executive director Rho Lansden said.
The music plays until midnight. Salvage Town is the headline performer. Other performers scheduled to play are Black Cat Cadillac, Shady Jake and the Upsetters, Kenton Bryant, John Caps and Lindsey Whitaker, Seth and Ashley Mufford and Paul Williams and Johnathon Tomes.
Lost River Pizza Co. will sell pizza, appetizers, beer and wine. T-shirts will also be available for purchase. A free boat tour for concert ticket holders will be available from 6 to 9 p.m.
Money raised at the concert will pay for the construction of an outdoor nature classroom on the 70-acre property on Nashville Road.
Construction is slated to begin this fall on the classroom, which was developed and tested by the Arbor Day Foundation. It will become the first Arbor Day Foundation-certified outdoor nature classroom in southcentral Kentucky, Lansden said. It will be called the Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom.
Natural materials will be provided for children to learn to build structures – for example, a tree fort built from branches. The activity will integrate math and science learning among other skills.
There will also be programs about nature, music and teaching children how to be safe inside caves. While there will be supervision of children building structures, the organizers want to see the children interact on their own.
“We really want the children to use their own resources and imagination,” Lansden said.
The new facility will be about half the size of a school gymnasium.
Concert tickets are $20 a person or $35 for two in advance. Door tickets will be $25 per person.
