4 teens safe in cave, will be rescued in Laurel County as water recedes

Laurel County Sheriff John Root says four teenagers who were stranded by high water will be rescued as the Rockcastle River recedes.

Root says rescuers found the teens had taken shelter in a cave and had a fire going after getting a report Sunday night that they were missing. The youths had been four-wheeling in two pickup trucks when they became stranded near the No. 9 Tunnel, near East Bernstadt.

The London-Laurel County Rescue Squad determined it would be too dangerous to try to reach the youths in the dark.

The sheriff's office said the youths — all of them male — include two 15-year-olds, a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old.

The rescue squad planned to get the boys out of the cave after sunrise Monday.
